RO vs Alkaline vs UF: Choosing a Drinking Water System for Your Kitchen

Once your whole-house filter handles sediment and chlorine, the kitchen tap is where drinking water quality matters most. Three technologies dominate the Malaysian market — here's how they differ.

Reverse osmosis (RO)

RO pushes water through a very fine membrane that removes dissolved solids, heavy metals and most microorganisms. Water tastes very clean and neutral.

  • Pros: highest purity; ideal for older pipes and areas with frequent disruption
  • Cons: produces some reject water; removes minerals (many units add a remineralisation stage)

Alkaline / mineral systems

These systems filter water and then add minerals such as calcium and magnesium, raising pH slightly. Many households prefer the taste.

  • Pros: pleasant taste; keeps beneficial minerals
  • Cons: not as thorough as RO for dissolved contaminants

Ultrafiltration (UF)

UF uses a hollow-fibre membrane to remove bacteria and particles without electricity or reject water.

  • Pros: zero wastage, no power needed, low running cost
  • Cons: does not remove dissolved solids or heavy metals

Families with young children and offices often choose RO with remineralisation. Homes with a good whole-house filter may find UF or alkaline sufficient.

For offices and shop lots

Pantry units with hot & cold dispensing and a maintenance contract keep staff hydrated without bottled water deliveries — and remove the plastic waste.
